Holocaust Timeline

As the pictures above depict, the Holocaust was in no way something that this world should ever experience again. I apologies if I have offended or made any of you feel ill by the photos I have posted here. However to get the full grasp of the pain and suffering caused by this event. An emotional tie must be made, and seeing so many people perish at the hands of the Nazi's clearly can do just that.
Besides the number of photos that are on record as well as are on the internet, film has firmly shown the true stories and events that have made the discovery and view of this atrocity what it is today. Their are two films in particular that give a heart wrenching view. Schindler's List, and portions of the 9th episode of the Band of Brother's series. Both of these films show the point of view of those where were there, and in the case of the Americans, those who had no idea. Over the course of the next few days you will go over what these point of views are. And truly see for yourself the horror that was the Holocaust.

  1. Each of you will watch the films over the course of these few days and write down what you feel while watching.
  2. What is the difference between the two films? The difference in the reactions of the characters? What out of everything stands out to you the most?
  3. Who are the Einsatzgruppen? In your own words, explain and we will then go further from there.
  4. Why so much effort to destroy the Jewish population?

What I want you to get out of this was the visual representation. From, there I want you to write two pages about how you feel and what you saw.

"In their shoes" Webquest

Introduction
In the death camps of World War II, over six million European Jews perished at the hands of Nazi Germany. Have you ever met someone who lived through the “Holocaust”? Its Greek origins mean “sacrifice by fire.” It was the attempt at a state organized extermination of an entire ethnic group. In 1933 when Hitler came to power in Germany the Jewish Population of Europe was estimated at over nine million. Nearly two out of three of these people would be purged from Europe by the end of 1945. At first they were placed in ghettos and concentration camps. Eventually, a “Final Solution” was proposed in 1942. This led to an all out genocide of the Jews through a system of extermination camps.

Task
Congratulations!  You are a survivor of the Holocaust.  You are a Hungarian Gypsy and your 85th birthday is coming up this Friday.  You have given little thought about your experience recently but want to write an editorial in the local newspaper about your experiences.  To brush up your memory, review some sites on the Holocaust and create a 500 word column to be submitted to the editor.

Process
During your research time in class, review multiple websites to reeducate yourself on your experiences during WWII.  Remember, your brain may have pushed much of the information to the far corners because of how traumatic it was to you.  So feel free to spend a lot of time researching your experience and answering these questions.  Feel free to elaborate on your personal experience as much as possible as your creative juices get flowing.

  1. Where were you imprisoned?
  2. How long were you there?
  3. What were your living conditions like at the camp?
  4. How many people were there?
  5. Did you get to see your family?
  6. What was your occupation before your imprisonment?
  7. Were you in hiding before you were captured?
  8. During the day, what kind of activities did you participate in?
  9. What happened to your extended family members?
  10. What was the reason for your imprisonment according to the Nazi officers?

Conclusion
After concluding your research on the holocaust and completing this webquest, you should have a far more detailed understanding of what life was like from the perspective of someone who lived it first hand.  The sheer horror that was endured by the Jewish people that survived in the Nazi camps for years at a time is a hard thing to re-create, especially in this form. Yet the point of this webquest is not to explore every detail of this event, but to gain an understanding from the shoes of the people who were there.  We as human beings must understand just how evil the world can be, and the Holocaust is an event that none of us should forget for the rest of our existence.
